Seven for 2007

Here are seven things today's breast cancer survivors need to know to stay one step ahead of this disease:

  1. Women who consume even a few drinks per week raise their risk for breast cancer -- don't drink (too much).
  2. Dense breasts increase your risk -- find digital mammography.
  3. Vitamin D helps protect against several types of cancer -- drink milk?
Caveat for the next several ... estrogen is bad for breast cancer survivors.
  1. Because fat tissue converts into estrogen in the body even when ovarian production stops at menopause -- lose and/or don't gain weight!
  2. Activity keeps your weight down therefore decreasing the amount of estrogen in breast tissue -- exercise
  3. Use of birth control pills and HRT is risky -- don't mess with estrogen; just say no.
  4. Tamoxifen or raloxifene may cut the incidence of breast cancer in women at increased risk for the disease -- talk to your doctor (down with estrogen).
